Acts in the labour market (Oct. 2007)

The act on labour market informs you about the employment service system in Iceland,

measures for unemployed, administration of the system etc.

Labour Market Measures Act, No. 55/2006

The Act on Foreign Nationals´ to work in Iceland contains authorisation for the granting of work permits applying to work by foreign nationals in Iceland in accordance with government policy at any given time.  The Act also intends to guarantee the security under the law of foreign nationals who come to Iceland for the purpose of employment and to define the right of foreign nationals to work in Iceland subject to certain conditions.

Foreign Nationals´ to Work Act, No. 97/2002

The Act on the Rights and Obligations of Foreign Undertakings is about workers entitlement to receive wages in the event of illness and accidents while he/she works in Iceland in connection with the provision of services, accident insurance covering death, permanent injury and temporary loss of working capacity etc.

The act on temporary-work agencies gives any person wishing to provide temporary-work agency services in Iceland to notify the Directorate of Labour of eight working days before such operations are to begin for the first time.

Act on the rights and obligations of foreign undertakings that post workers temporarily in Iceland and on their workers´ terms and conditions of employment, No. 45/2007

According to Act on Trade Unions and Industrial Disputes people are entitled to found trade unions and federations of trade unions for the purpose of working jointly for the interests of the working class and wage earners in general.  A member of a trade union ceases to be found by his union´s statutes and those of its federation when he/she is no longer a member according to the unions´ rules but the agreements by which he/she has become bound during his membership are binding for him while he continues to engage in the type of work covered by the agreement concerned until the agreement could at the earlies be invalidated in accordance with notice of termination.
