Courses

The Directorate of Labor offers various courses while you receive unemployment benefits. You can find courses that you would like to pursue, apply for a course at your service centre or apply for online courses.

Icelandic – Beginners FB

Fjölbrautarskólinn í Breiðholti FB offers an Icelandic course for foreigners. This is an intensive course of 14 hours per week on location. We offer four subjects all aimed at improving language skills in Icelandic. Those are Icelandic language, spoken Icelandic, Icelandic social skills and Icelandic culture.

Pre-course requirements: None

Timetable: Monday to Thursday from 13:45 to 17 and Friday from 12 to 14.

Starts: Thursday and Friday 19th / 20th with interviews. Each student comes one of those days for an interview. You will receive an e-mail with the time and location.

Teaching starts according to schedule Monday 23rd August.

Length: 16 weeks.

Outcome: By passing this course you will get a certificate and up to 18 credits (feiningar) for upper secondary education.

Please note that to be able to attend this course you must fulfill the requirements of Opportunity in Education and have been unemployed and registered as such for at least 6 months with The Directorate of Labour. 

Icelandic - Intermediate FB

Fjölbrautarskólinn í Breiðholti FB offers an Icelandic course for foreigners. This is an intensive course of 10 hours, on location classes per week. We offer three subjects all aimed at improving language skills in Icelandic. Those are Icelandic language, spoken Icelandic and Icelandic culture.

Pre-course requirements: 220 hours of icelandic courses or passing an interview and a test, showing similar knowledge to those who have finished our beginner’s course. Students can use the Europass grid (see link above) to self-evaluate. Note that you can google Europass in all the European languages.

Timetable: Monday to Thursday from 13:45 to 16 and Friday from 14 to 16.

Starts: Thursday and Friday 19th / 20th with interviews. Each student comes one of those days for an interview. You will receive an e-mail with the time and location. It will take half an hour.

Teaching starts according to schedule Monday 23rd August.

Length: 16 weeks.

Add on

For those who would like to study more than 10 hours, we offer you to add 4 more hours to the schedule by choosing other courses at school. This we work out with each student depending on your needs and interests. The timetable for these classes varies.

Vitamin

Please note that this course is not on schedule for the time being but you can sign up and we will let you know when the next course will be held. 

Vitamin is a training course for 18-25 year old's that focuses on well-being, mixed with practical advice for the job search in Iceland. Over 5 week period the participants will engage in various activities that empower them in utilizing the opportunities available. The course takes place at Hitt Húsið and partially online, under the guidance of Hitt Húsið's employment consultants and other relevant specialists.

Capacity - Career - Conduct

The aim of this course is to make participants more secure in job search and increase their possibilities of finding a job.

The emphasis of the course is to reinforce the skills and efficiency of participants and the importance of knowing one's strengths and abilities. Participants will learn how to make a successful job application. They will be guided in making a practical CV, get information about where to find jobs and how to behave at job interviews. Also, there will be a session about cultural diversity in the workplace and positive communication. 

The course is 12 hours over 3 days.
