Learning Icelandic

Learning Icelandic in summer 2020

Grant (námsstyrkur)

Vinnumálastofnun pays 50% of the price for Icelandic courses from level 1-5 once per semester, but never more than 70 000 kr. per year. You can choose which language school you want to attend (a list of the schools in the Capital Area is below). When you have signed up for a course you can send the copy of the bill (photo of it is sufficient) to radgjafar@vmst.is. On this document there should be your name and kennitala, name of the course, price and dates of the course, as well as the name and kennitala of the school. To be able to apply for this grant you need to have your application for unemployment benefits confirmed first.

Icelandic courses offered in program Summer courses 2020 (Sumarnám 2020)

There is also a possibility to learn Icelandic during the summer and pay only 3000 kr for the course. VMST does not refund those courses.

The University of Iceland (Háskóli Íslands) offers Icelandic classes from levels 1-5. You can get more information if you click the link below:

Studies on high-school and university level

You can study and maintain your full unemployment allowances under the following conditions:

  • If you want to study on a University level you can take up to 10 ECTS per semester. You have to inform a counsellor by sending email to radgjafar@vmst.is.
  • If you want to study on a high-school level, you can only take 1/3 of units scheduled in your school per semester at night school or distance learning and you must sign a study contract. To do that please contact a counselor by sending email to radgjafar@vmst.is.

Under special circumstances it is possible to take more units than described above. In those situations, unemployment benefits are reduced according to the units of the courses. In the link below you can receive more information about it:
